The High Point Genetics cowherd consists of 425 registered females of which 75% are Angus and 25% are SimAngus. The cowherd is managed under conditions that mirror commercial operations in our area with cows run primarily on fescue and bluegrass pastures and limited labor resources. Since our
beginning nearly 30 years ago, Brian has maintained full time employment off the farm.
High Point Genetics has selected for modest birth weights while at the same time demanding breed leading growth and performance. While we do not breed for the show ring, it is very important to us that our cattle have eye appeal and look the part. With labor resources being limited over the years, the convenience traits such as easy-going dispositions, excellent udders, feet and legs, as well as mothering ability and fertility have been paramount. We are believers in genomics and EPDs and are proud of the fact that the majority of our herd bulls that have roamed our pastures are nationally known and have been leased to major AI studs.

Construction of "The Harken Farms Barn” began in 1935 by Mr. Klinebeck of Murray, Iowa and was completed in 1937. At the time it was built it was of the most modern design and featured a beef barn that could be converted into a 1,000 seat show pavilion in 2-1/2 hours.
Our family’s first recollection of the Harken Barn was in the mid 1970’s when we were looking for pasture to rent in southern Iowa. Realtors showed us land south of Des Moines including farms owned by Dr. C. R. Harken, a well-known Osceola native son, who returned to Osceola to practice medicine.
During the years when Doc practiced medicine in Osceola, many patients who were unable to pay their bills, would repay Doc by working on the farm helping with the manicuring of his farmstead as well as working for Doc in the farming and cattle operation. His Black Angus herd was a well-known herd in Iowa and Missouri.
Visiting the farm often was J. C. Penney, The Penney’s store founder, who was also a Black Angus cattleman from the Hamilton and Polo, Missouri area. Angus association field days were held on the farm lawn. Doc’s staff also showed his Aberdeen Angus cattle at various places nationally, including the International Stock Show in Chicago, where they won many honors. Back in the 40’s and 50’s the barn could be converted to a sale arena with bleachers on both sides of the south wing, chairs above in the mezzanine and an auction block. The barn was heated with a large pot-bellied stove in the center of the barn. The brick barn is a favorite of visitors and continues to be the location for our annual bull sale the fourth Saturday in February.
Visitors are always welcome!
